Selaron's Steps

A lot of people talk about the steps, but also warn you about the area and tell you not to go there alone. It was a wonderful sunny day in Central Rio and I decided to find those things and see for myself. What could go wrong. A little seedy, the steps are located in a favela, but once you get past the aquaduct, not so diffucult to find. Indeed, there were a lot of people there, but hardly anyone walks up, other than locals. Tourists usually come by bus or taxi. More fun walking there, though. Just move fast and don't linger anywhere on the way. Lots of cool wall art on the way there to admire.Be prepared for some real gratuirous 'eye candy'.

The artist who labored 20 years on these steps and then was found dead at the bottom of them. It was suicide and I guess, his life's work complete, he lost the will to go on.

I love this stuff, as you can tell. A lot of talent here.

And of course, souvenirs and unique arts and crafts being sold right there, by the steps

Wow! Those carved macaws. I like them, but impossible to get home.

And here we are, Selaron's Steps.

They look like this, and this is not the tourist season. When a bus or two leaves, you can really see them as intended.
